Localization etc:

I feel like the dub didn't put as much importance in the fact that they've been friends most of their lives. Not textually, but by nuance. The text is all there - them always saying this that and the other thing that they know about each other, but it just sounds... more plain in English, like matter-of-fact speaking. Less heartfelt I guess? And yeah, half of their "arguments" in English are more just... them talking in JP. They're used to each other's behavior and habits enough that it really isn't that serious.

Oh yeah that was totally Rays lmao my bad. I sometimes get the two mixed up just on the sheer fact that I consumed content for them pretty much simultaneously. That doesn't change the fact that Asteria did give us Yuri and Flynn as knights together to start off Yuri's story though (and they literally fuckin' went "oh and here's Asbel... and Richard. in Yuri and Flynn's part." woof. real subtle, that one!), so Asteria still stuck to the usual guns. I can pretty much guarantee any side story Yuri would've gotten in Crestoria would've heavily involved Flynn and him being completely distraught over Yuri being a transgressor. I can't imagine there'd be any other way for that to go; it's more of a matter of what they'd do for Yuri from there, and I'm sure Flynn would come to an understanding with him.

See you having a degree in JP and me having very on and off understanding (you could say entire sentences I won't understand squat of, but then sentences I completely understand) makes it even more wild to me LOL. Just like, how much of a noticeable difference everything is, not just in tone but in text. Even someone a lot less proficiency in the language can pick up on how vastly different some stuff is. I'm sure some of it was due to crunch time originally, but the fact that they didn't go back and fix anything when they re-released the game from the remake is just pure laziness.

They also clearly didn't check with the original script at all, so things just don't match up (Flynn saying "good luck out there" after Yuri learns Final Gale is like... wait but you're going with us). That plus all the grammatical errors, textual dialogue not matching up with vocal dialogue, and the weirdly worded stuff that was almost certainly put in as a placeholder but forgotten about just tells me they really didn't put a whole lot of care into the DE localization.

It's been a couple years since I watched a walkthrough of Arise (my computer couldn't handle it even from the demo LOL, I had to watch it), but I recall some similar issues like that popping up there too? Apparently Berseria skits toward the end of the game very clearly used text to speech too and released as a final product that way? I don't know if it's been updated since I haven't played the game, but I feel like western Bamco's care for Tales games is pretty miniscule at best. Hearts R was a mess and it killed me hearing the vocal dialogue and seeing the nonsense text (it wasn't even grammatical etc so much as just... what were they even trying to do other than be quirky?), and that's on top of the fact that they didn't even bother giving it English voiceover period.

Part of me is glad for it if only because I wasn't locked into English dialogue (COUGHS ON GRACES which ironically had a pretty close tl/loc from my understanding (I started with a fan sub when it was out on the Wii, so it was only later that I watched a YT playthrough dubbed, and now there's a playlist of an undubbed version using loc text and JP audio) but the voice acting was sub par and the skits sounded like compressed audio files) where I couldn't hear the difference if I had been, but the other part of me is clawing chalkboards over the huge disconnect of what I'm hearing and reading.

I think all of that on top of the fact that they for some reason refuse to call voice actors back just puts me off so much more on localized Tales. Part of me wants a remake for Legendia, but I'm also like... there's no way they'd actually bring every voice actor back, so they'd either have to keep the dialogue like with Vesperia and just add new parts, or they'd change everything and all the actors (which the latter I think they'd do for all the new stuff anyway). Considering they literally replaced Shiloh Strong in ToS2 despite that he'd also recently voiced Moses in Legendia (and he, like Troy, told a fan they never even contacted him to return as Zelos), at this point I have no high hopes or faith in how much they care about bringing VAs back.

And really, that's a huge disconnect I think in how something like Vesperia is so differently understood in the west. Our VAs don't get the same direction or dedicated to their role (as in, they're not given the same life commitment someone like Toriumi has because he voices Yuri pretty much regularly due to gacha games and every other goddamn crossover he's been in LOL). With western Bamco in particular, other companies aside, it's especially bad. Vesperia got lucky with how many people they brought back, as absolutely jarring as Leblanc and Don are to listen to in the DE. ToS2 got like, one or two voice actors back.

I'm hoping something changes with that going forward (i.e. they actually make more effort to brings VAs back in a similar fashion to how JP VAs keep their roles almost permanently save for retirement/death/a huge scandal that doesn't get roped in quick enough - which like, Takahiro Sakurai broke my heart with that scandal having been a dedicated fan of his most of my life lol), but I'm sad to think Troy may be off the role for good.

Troy's direction was pretty much wildly incorrect in a lot of spots, but he at least did the part well and did it justice for what he had to work with. Grant George sounds extremely emotionless as Yuri and based on what I've heard of his acting in other roles, they really tried to force his voice to mimic Troy's and it... sounded like he was trying too hard, because he doesn't sound quite like that in his other roles.

I personally think his voice just doesn't work for Yuri (it's even deeper than Troy's and even more serious, and if we thought Troy was a giant step away from Toriumi's acting, Grant's is even further away), and if Yuri ever appears in anything dubbed again, I really hope they bring Troy back. It's ironic how First Strike brought Sam and Troy back only to replace every single other VA... and then do the exact opposite for the DE. Sam is the sole survivor lmao (and he's quite good at his role at least, and a lot closer to Mamoru like you said, than how Troy and Grant are with Toriumi).

I gotta be honest, if they won't bring Troy back, I'm probably never willingly listening to anything Vesperia related dubbed again LMAO. I won't be able to deal with Grant voicing Yuri, much less with the direction he was already given as a hint of how that would continue to go. I also haven't really seen any love for Yuri from Grant so like... it's a huge bummer. Troy at least loved his role and Toriumi's a lifer, but I've never seen or heard anything about Grant really just going through it as a passing job (which would be valid given his very limited time in the role and was more of a fill in, but we don't know if that would change and if he'd keep the role going forward if Yuri had more dubbed appearances). I guess for me Yuri is too precious of a character and memory for me (man was my resident idol as a teenager LOL) to have someone voicing him who may not really care about him as a role or have that same passion.

All that said about the localizations, I have no idea exactly who localized Crestoria, but they did a relatively good job with it (Mileena in Rays, at least from what I've heard in any voiced stuff I could find online, had some pretty big flavor text additions/changes and I don't know why or why they went so hard with it). Unfortunately I don't know that the same people would be localizing any main entries going forward, but I want to at least hope it's a decent sign that maybe they'll care more in the future... but again, since it was a gacha, I'm not so sure they'll have that level of commitment for a mainline entry that's going to have a lot more text to work on.

Queerness + modern Tales:

As for the queerness, I agree! Tales at least has kinda always had the queer coding (I would not consider Dhaos "manly standards" from his time, and they followed that up with Leon, eventually we landed ourselves a Zelos and arguably a Mao, had Jay thrown right into our faces, and so on... and eventually we ran into Richard which. Well. ...Wait most of my faves are queer coded I think I'm onto something LMAO), but Vesperia was a lot more front and center with it.

Funny thing is, when I first played Vesperia which had to have been like 2008/2009 because I was going into highschool/just starting out in highschool (mainly just that I'm not sure how quickly I got it when it came out), I was completely under the impression that Duke was in love with Elucifer. Looking back on it now, my impression is... still exactly the same LOL. For real though, seeing Duke and hearing him was the best whiplash I think I've ever experienced in my life (even in the dub I'd say they did well with the casting, because it's not too much deeper than his JP voice, which is still not what you'd have expected from a man THAT pretty back then LOL).

The NPCs are that traveler and guy from Zaphias, right? I remember some dude complaining right before you get Estelle back that he was "stuck there" or something and I believe that's the pair you mean that was traveling? I see them together in various inns so I am guessing that's them.

PISS I never even knew about that Heliord guy. Or I just completely forgot because I may have spoken to him in the 360 version and just missed him while playing the DE, but basically my sister lent our copy of Vesperia at one point to one of her friends who never gave it back who she is no longer friends with so our 360 copy is long gone and I haven't been able to play it since. I should still have my data since I have my save data hard drive for the 360, but I can't do anything with it without the game. OTL

Also on that note, when I was younger first playing the game, I went into it fully trying to prepare myself for the expectation that Yuri and Estelle were going to end up together, because every Tales I'd played prior went super hard on the main m/f pairs (including how awkward it was to have Senel/Shirley implications after he'd been with Stella and fully considered Shirley his sister, which JRPGs for some reason really love leaning into blurring the lines between sibling love and romantic love). I was pretty much trying to force myself to like their dynamic romantically out of the expectation that it would exist (basically Zelloyd existed and was technically possible but I was also aware they were trying to say your choices didn't matter all that much because Colloyd was still canon anyway, which thank god Innocence didn't pull) as early as the Quoi Woods.

Mind you, this was when I only had access to the dub, and that's what I mean by the original JP's context still got through to me/was still strong enough that even the localization couldn't erase it completely, because I still ended up walking away from Vesperia with Fluri-Determined-Canon. That's on top of me going into it having completely resigned myself to "I have to force myself to like this het ship because it's going to happen anyway". Blessed be when I walked out with Yuri and Flynn instead. I recently introduced a friend to Vesperia who is playing the DE dub and is still primarily recognizing Fluri as canon but likes Yuri and Estelle's dynamic too, so it seems like a tier of would ship Yuri and Estelle but recognizes Fluri as canon and ships them more.

Yeah see like, I truly do find it wild that nobody can write a man and a woman as siblings because of romance. Like, is it really so odd for an older brother to want to rescue his younger sister, be distraught about possibly having to kill her, or catching her when she's falling toward him? No, because that's actually quite literally what many if not most older brothers would do. It's not uncommon to have a protective older brother.

But since they're not actually related, you know, no such thing as found family if you're a man and a woman or the main gender leads in a Tales game (unless you're Graces where you still can't write romance where you try and can write it where you don't try). If you care about the opposite gender very strongly, you are only allowed to be romantically involved! No such thing as "best friends" when you're a man and a woman! ...But you know, if you're two men, there's no such thing as romance. If you're two women, it's just 'girl things". It's honestly crazy to me how people don't realize how extremely heteronormative those viewpoints are and how borderline if not outright homophobic they are.

As mentioned I only watched Arise because my computer isn't capable of playing it and I don't have the other systems for it. I didn't mind the main m/f couple this time since it wasn't poorly written, but then I had to put up with Law and Rin which irritated me to no end and was a purely trope based romance that seemed to only exist to pair another guy and girl (because for some reason Tales likes to pair as many m/fs as possible instead of just... not doing romance at all for some characters. Still to this day have no idea Zelos and Sheena are so popular as a couple when I literally never saw them romantically, and that's having literally grown up with Symphonia since like, grade school. It feels like another case of "pair the next closest guy and girl you can think of even if it's not romantic). No idea how he could fall in love with her when she treats him that way and she's one of the most vexing Tales characters for me to date, and that's not because of her pre-development personality, but because I just can't stand her by and large. The forced romance and how she treats her apparent love interest and how it's mutual was just the nail in the coffin for me.

Suffice to say I also have really no interest in more modern Tales games. I've been putting the newer entries off very hard since ToX2. I don't think Zestiria is inherently bad so much as it holds very little to no interest to me and I watched the anime (which I fully recognize is a big departure to game canon) without even completing the game, which I still to this day have not done. I know some major details about the game from looking stuff up intentionally, but... my interest just isn't there. X and X2 weren't bad but they were very mid for me (and tbh I like Ludger more in his non-canon appearances, probably due to the silent protagonist being really heavy with him. I think that was more an experiment on Bamco's part too). I didn't get too attached to the story or the characters.

Same with Berseria, which is in part because I'm so horribly sick of the "emotionless and/or revenge driven cool girl main character" trope. Again, I know some spoilery details, but it didn't help my investment and it's also hard to get through when I actively dislike the main character I'm dealing with (the amount of mental thundering applause and drunken slamming I did in Crestoria when Senel basically politely, in a sense, told Velvet off was one of the most interestingly wild things I've ever felt LMAO. Especially bc he's the lead of my favorite game, so that was... an experience).

As for Yuri and Estelle, did they have Arise cameos or something? That at least I'm unaware of as I only really watched the main story content and that was a couple years ago (so I haven't even watched the DLC story, which I'd been meaning to do but keep putting off in favor of the gachas LOL). But also, queer removal, especially to force het in, is disgusting and while I want to say that writer should be ashamed of himself, people who remove queer coding don't really seem to have the ability to be ashamed of themselves in the first place and there's a Very Specific Reason for that.

...Well, at least I don't have to be particularly polite about not liking Estelle here LOL. I don't... hate her on the scale I would easily say I hate other characters from other games, but she's a big ol' no from me. Most Tales games end up with that one female character I can't stand with very few exceptions and it definitely grinds my "stop writing females like this" gears.

Yeah, that's also how I see Estelle's crush on him. It feels to me like something that would wane over time. He's this slightly older cool guy who respected her and helps her grow and he's the first person she really met outside the castle (and Flynn half counts in that he didn't originally live there, but he also has a room there so he's technically a castle resident in some capacity. Yuri is fully hands off with any of the stuff Estelle was familiar with). Heck, I'd probably have a crush on him too if I met him.

Crushes can also be kind of complicated in my experience tbh, because having a crush on someone for me didn't ever necessarily mean I'd want to be in love with them, you know? Being in love is a lot deeper and a much more mature level of romance, and I feel like platonic crushing is very much a thing? I mean I guess it has to be if I've experienced it lol; I just don't know how "societally accepted/recognized" that is.

That's kind of what I see from Estelle though - a more platonic crush that would fade with time. I also would like to think Estelle would respect Yuri and Flynn and their relationship, and wouldn't have this kind of... but what about my feelings sort of attitude toward them, like trying to guilt Yuri or something for rejecting her but still being as he always is with Flynn.

Damn, is all this stuff on the Tales of YT channel where they upload stuff like that? I can't exactly go to Japan for any of the festival/anniversary things, so all I can hope for is that things will be recorded and put onto YT.

A summary of Vesperia:

Act 1: Yuri never ever shuts up about Flynn. There is something going on here.

Act 2: Yuri and Flynn broke up so we could force het into the game and ignore everything the previous writers set up.

Act 3: We're erasing everything the previous writers set up and trying to reconnect with Act 1. Just forget everything you just played in Act 2. That aside, anyway fellas, it's the end of the world and Duke is the antagonist!

Honestly, maybe if all the writers actually communicated in the first place, Act 2 would've been a lot better and Okuda wouldn't have wanted to write for it at all when he couldn't have his jolly ol' het way. Like, why do I feel like this guy is the type of person to rage quit if he was told "well you can't do that because we already had these two characters planned for each other". Realizes he can't shoehorn his favorite Vesperia ship in anymore and just walks out LOL.I need a time machine... I have a mission...

Yeah, the het stuff in Graces was a HUGE ol' "gotta put as many m/fs together as possible" (even Malik's backstory), which is probably why people tend to assume Richard/Sophie is canon/the direction they were nudging at, because at that point they're just the leftovers and everything else was het so why not (still not a good thing to do, mind, but I suspect that's a large part of it). I never, ever saw how Hubert and Pascal worked out as a couple. Like... it wasn't written in a way that would lead me to think they'd fall in love? It just... randomly... happened. It's one of those things where I just can't feasibly see it happening with the content we were given for it. Maybe if they developed it better? But like... they didn't, so... I just don't see it.

As much as I know and don't know about Zestiria, I do like Alisha. I also recall there was some kind of outrage at her treatment in the game and how she got sidelined from being the main heroine for Rose because of the writer (which apparently led to people hating Rose less for her actual character and more because of that internal staff stuff). I have heard a lot about how much of a mess Zestiria was, and that could be in part why I've been so putting it off for so long.

Vesperia was already a mess and I can safely say I wouldn't think about it anywhere near as much as I do now if not for Yuri and Flynn (both as characters and as a couple, though I can also say Yuri carries the whole game on his shoulders for me and is why I can play it several times in a row the way I can with other Tales games if I'm invested enough in at least one character). I'd say in Zestiria's case it's also because Alisha falls into "like her for what's available" versus my insanely large hyperfixation on Yuri.

looool so like, Abyss for me was the game I wished they didn't pair the main male with the main female and instead did what Graces did. I wanted Luke to end up with Natalia because the development from where they started went so well and I wanted Luke and Tear to be platonic m/f friends. Then Graces finally did what I wished they would goddamn do and not just pair the main male with the immediate main female... and then they completely botched it by giving them a poor romance and extremely awkward development as previously mentioned, as well as doing that in the worst possible game when they had Fluri 2.0 right there. LIKE. DAMN. I CANNOT WIN WITH THESE PEOPLE.

Yeah, I do feel like now that you mention it that I see people view Zestiria as more queer than Vesperia which is... very awkward lol. I'd have to guess many of them haven't played Vesperia or Graces (because regardless of what they did with Asbel, Richard never actually actively appears to have any interest whatsoever in women and seems more demiromantic toward Asbel). I mean, yeah, the dub for Vesperia could be part of the problem, but if my friend is playing the dub and still sees the queer coding everywhere and if I got past the forced het nonsense when I first played and had no access to the JP dialogue, I think it's pretty clear enough? And they tend to crank that up to eleven in the drama CDs with Fluri at every possible opportunity, or Toriumi and Mamoru will just do it themselves LOL.

I think that's part of why Vesperia still matters to me, aside from Yuri. As they say, I always "knew" I was bi-leaning-women as far as attraction went (basically like, as soon as I started having crushes on "cute girls" before my teen years, so really, I started having crushes on girls before I crushed on any guys). It was never a matter of "when did you realize", but that I kinda always just knew from the moment my brain recognized what a crush was.

That is very likely part of why I've always leaned to the queer rep in Tales. Like I said earlier here, I basically just put two and two together and that my favorites are mooostly the queer coded characters, and I include 13 year old Mao because I was younger than 13 when I first could have been defined as LGBT+. For him it's less outward romance and more his design/personality, but I count it (similar to Cumore in design).

So hey, this conversation made me realize something about myself that I've had going on since Symphonia first came out in the west, so thanks for that LOL. My brain always looked at Zelos and Zelloyd and went "that one. I want that one". Mind you, this was before "yaoi" and all that. It was never "hehe two guys together", because I was both too young to really get involved in that stuff and also, the internet was a fucking pea back then as far as fandoms went. Nothing influenced me except my own brain and interests.

Growing up and still having Zelos written this way is honestly so wonderful and relieving. Even the localization of Crestoria (which, as much as it shut down, is still relatively recent as far as Tales content goes) had Zelos making particular remarks at Lloyd (including "falling in love with me all over again?"). It's like, I guess little me at the time could recognize the relation to Zelos, the queer coding, and that there was something beyond "I like his story/backstory". That was in my formative years for recognizing romance I guess. Probably why I also put a magnifying glass on Mithos' interactions with Genis LOL.

And then in my teen years I had Yuri, so yeah, I totally get you on feeling like this about everything. I basically could say I grew up with seeing parts of myself in Zelos and Yuri, and between that I had Leon too. I was cosplaying the guy at right around sixteen so I have no idea when I got interested in him/Destiny, but evidently I got deep into Tales right fucking quick when the internet properly allowed, because at this point it's honestly a huge blur when I first knew of what game except that I know Symphonia was my first very young, then Legendia my second. Vesperia when I was going into highschool, and Leon happened when I sixteen or so LOL.

In Tales' case I'm the same way about defending the original content etc, though also because I always defend the original above all other releases/forms of release. Like, the reason I'll defend the JP dialogue in a JRPG or in an anime is because that's it country of origin. Similarly, I would primarily defend a western based TV series based on western related things (writers, actors, etc). For me the original writers' intentions matter most and I hate when things are changed in translation/localization without necessity (language and cultural differences are necessity for example).

That's not to say Tales doesn't have its hiccups in its own writing sometimes (Graces lol), but they at least try. Lowkey just waiting on a Vesperia 2 (no Okuda included, writers not sold separately) that's like, post Vesperia with the same characters and just cements Fluri. Give me like, Yuri when he's 25 or something. Some few years between the games. Make Richard and Asbel an arena cameo just to make a point LOL.

Also I could be reading into the Toriumi going off script a bit wrong here for this in particular, but it felt like kinda... not tense but...?? Like them being polite/professional but there being some kind of tension in the whole "but she's the princess!" (i.e. implication is that she should be Yuri's heroine and he should be in love with her) and Toriumi having to explain they're not like that? It just felt like... one of those, you're trying to be respectful in front of a crowd, but there's a clear spark of kinda-tension because of the blatant "but it's supposed to be this way"/"it's really not like that though". That could just be my read on it because of how I'd feel in that situation of course, but it was veeery awkward and I am so glad Toriumi went with the "fuck it" route and kept things to what they'd normally be. Also, I can't see Yuri ever being in love with Estelle. Even in the localized DE, Rita did say Flynn is Yuri's type and she's... right lol. Which... Estelle does not fit into. At all. I very much see "cute little sister" vibes from him. Makes sure his little sister is adjusted for the night and then goes out all night with his boyfriend and she's too innocent to know the level of trouble they get into it. That he gets into, really, that his boyfriend is bailing him out of. :')

anyway i think zagi and hasta should be romantic in a really violent-toward-other-people way

I am 100 percent with you on preferring the JP line in that cutscene if only because it does feel more powerful (and his voice is SO soft, which is something that frequently gets completely lost in the dub in general. Mamoru carries a much softer tone overall for Flynn, similar to how Yuri's playfulness and carefree vibe got lost in favor of the dub's aim for a more "cool adult guy").

That said, I was not even aware they left the whistle out!!! I haven't bothered with that sidequest because the outfit is readily available for free as DLC.

While I enjoy having Flynn present in the last battle, I wish they'd just had him look back up at the sky and say that right next to Yuri right before the very end of the cutscene (since imo that'd be the best placement for it). No reason not to stick that back in!!!

But removing the whistle is just an outright crime and I am owed a fee from the people who decided that for the devastation I've been inflicted with.

I used to be such a fan of the eng dub but tbh ever since I experienced the original japanese (back when we still called it the PS3 Version lol) I never looked back. The wording is so, so, SO much more layered and leaves little room to misinterpret subtleties and subtext. Like you, I've had many gripes about the localization because sometimes they just plain insert stuff that was never there in the first place - iirc Troy Baker admited that apparently they rushed the dub so hard, sometimes the voice actors themselves were asked to chip in for the translation...he said he loved that (I'll bet), but that might explain why so much of the OG english script was already full of weird phrasings and insertions...add to that the even more sloppy and lazy DE localization and you get only half of the richness of the original japanese.

Also yes Mamo and Tori *are* Flynn and Yuri more than anybody ever could be. Sam and Troy do a good enough job but I agree that Troy may have been directed to play Yuri closer to a traditional "cool bad boy", which is hilarious given how the original Yuri is a twist on that very trope. Unfortunately, Troy gave him this uncharacteristically cold/aggressive edge whenever he talks to Flynn that it makes it sound like he's always annoyed to see him, and it strips their relationship of so much of the softness and playfulness that Tori lends Yuri.

Anyway enough about me ranting because I could go on for about 10 more hours about this issue lmao. Honestly yeah they very well could've rearranged Flynn's cutscene to fit in there at the end, like hell if you can change the entire camera angles of whole scenes you can change that one background, no?? Knowing Tomizawa though that might have been more effort than he was willing to grant this remaster - won't be his last time.

Same for the wolf whistling!! They replaced it with a skit that is just as funny...

....but void of the insane flirting the original had. Idek why they went so far as to change it, it would've been less work to just leave it as it was 😭

This fic is about Eden! Eden was a character i made for a game that unfortunately died after session one. She uses she/him pronouns (mostly she, but likes he as well) anddddd god i love her so much. He was a firefighter in life. She's a lasombra embraced into the Camarilla after they defected. He's a known corpse <3 he eats people who won't be missed <3 She has SELF ESTEEEEEM ISSUESSSS and she is super gay. Yeah.

I wanted this piece to be longer but wanted to post it... so maybe i'll continue this later!

Eden still liked the crunch of her boots on the snow, even if the icy feel of wind on her face wasn’t as sharp now, since she was cold too. He missed how the cold made everything come into focus, though to be fair, his senses were far stronger now than they ever had been when he was alive. That she liked. 

What she did not like was having to report to her fucking sire, Dante. 

Up the stairs to the his porch. She hated how this old wooden building looked like a stereotypical vampire mansion. She hated how she was hand delivered letters like it was the goddamn 18th century. She hated Dante, ordering her around like she was a child. 

But most of all, she hated herself for just going along with it.

It wasn’t time to think about that though. Bang on the door, yell “I’m here,” wait for his ghoul to open up. 

And there he was, the sniveling pathetic man. “Good evening, Miss Cheng.” God, could he be any more stereotypical, always insisting on ‘miss.’ 

“I’m here, so it could be better.”

His lip curled, shifting his graying mustache. “Certainly. Come in, Master Dante is ready.” 

Eden was already walking in the door. 

Dante’s haven had shockingly modern furniture for his age; probably because he was feral in the woods with the Sabbat less than a decade ago, and only recently joined society. Eden’s lips curled in distaste upon passing the foyer; he had bought more wine that he did not drink. What a joke. She made a note to ask him sometime if he even remembered what alcohol tasted like. 

Eden made a point to stomp wet snow and mud on the rug specifically on the way to his office. The door was open, and she swung it open without a second thought. 

“Sup.” 

“No knock today?” Dante gave his standard asshole grin and ran his hand through his hair as he replied. “Sit down.” 

Eden did as he was told, and said nothing. He hoped that Dante didn’t know what ‘sup’ meant and was just refusing to ask. 

Wait, oh my god. Was that another skull on his desk. 

“Is that another skull?”

“How observant, Miss Cheng. Yes, it is.” 

Eden almost spat on his desk at that; he hated being called miss. Second time tonight. However, he had previously told her not to spit in his office. She gave him a tight smile instead as he continued. 

Dante picked up the skull and looked at it, holding it just above eye level, as if he was in a goddamn theater. “This fellow is actually what I am here to talk to you about tonight. Can you feel it, Eden?” 

Eden sucked in her breath, stalling as he tried to come up with a witty reply. Failing that, she just said “no.” 

Dante’s grin never faltered. “Not surprised, you are certainly not a natural.” Bastard. “Look at this skull. Deep into its eyes. It’s a surprisingly strong fetter, even you should be able to discern this. Take it.” 

Eden took it, though she felt absolutely nothing. 

“You shall show this to Peyton, and request their sire take a look at it.”  

Peyton’s mysterious sire. Dante was always asking about her, in a roundabout way, though Eden had no idea why he was so fixated on her. “And what’s in it for you?”

“Promise them more where that came from if they teach you how to feast upon its energies. Do not show Anisha until Peyton promises you something, even if they cannot commit to fully teaching you.” 

“What.” 

“What is the confusion?” 

“You want me to ask them to teach me to feed off of energy? Huh? Isn’t our whole deal that we eat blood and only blood?”

“Eden, you sound like a fool.” 

“No, you do, what the hell dude. Vampire 101” 

“I’ve told you not to curse. It’s disrespectful. Now, do as I said”

Eden stood up abruptly, and stalked off without a word. She almost punched the ghoul when he tried to get the door for her. 

“Miss Cheng, you may want a bag for the, erm, skull.” 

“Don’t fucking call me that.” He stuffed the skull under his armpit, mostly hiding it, and headed out. 

Time to text Peyton, or whatever. It was difficult to do with one hand. 

“Hey need to talk to u got somethin”

Eden was not about to carry this thing around all night. He stalked back to the apartment complex where he had been making his haven recently. It was a good hour long walk, and the skull was already digging uncomfortably into her. 

She gritted her teeth and continued.

In her current, temporary as usual, apartment, she set the skull casually on the kitchen counter. Seeing Peyton hadn’t texted back, he pulled up a stool and stared at this skull. 

It looked like a regular skull, not much notable about it. It was fairly white, so couldn’t be that old. Eden reached out and rubbed the top of it, trying to tap into well, something, but there was nothing. No energy, or whatever. At least not to her. 

Eden had only turned on one light; the room was dim and shadowy. Closing her eyes for a moment, she gathered the shadows around her - something she usually did to stalk prey in the middle of the night.

Carlos grips Jay's shoulder tightly as he tries to follow behind him. Jay's moving so fast, and Carlos has already stumbled over his feet a few times trying to keep up with the pace. The hallway is nearly pitch black, and as much as he tries to blink and adjust, he sees nothing but darkness.

"Jayyyy," he whines, and shifts to loop his arm through his boyfriend's. "Where are we going? Do you even know where we are?? I can't see shit."

"Don't worry C," Jay tuts, patting Carlos' hand reassuringly as he pulls him along. "I already scoped it out. And I found something I think you'll like."

Jay throws him a wink. At least, that's what Carlos thinks he sees.

"Fine, but let's not take too long, ok? We haven't even sung 'Happy Birthday' to Ben, yet. Evie and Mal will probably be looking for us in a few minutes."

"Yeah, yeah. This won't take long. Promise."

Jay drops Carlos' grip to wrap his arm around his shoulders instead, pulling him in close. Carlos sighs and cuddles in as they walk. Jay smells so fresh and clean, and his silky hair is soft against Carlos' cheek. It’s wonderfully distracting from the eeriness of the dark, abandoned hall.

"Wait-here! Right here, C."

Carlos startles and jumps back a little as Jay reaches in front of him to grab the nearest doorknob. He yanks it open quickly, flooding the hallway with a warm golden light. Carlos blinks furiously at the brightness as Jay drags him through the threshold.

"This is what I found," Jay adds with a nod. Carlos glances around the room, and it's...incredible.

It's a bedroom, that made clear by the massive canopy bed in front of them, just across from the gold-framed window. It's draped in ivory silks, the most detailed rose carvings trailing down the wooden posts. And the elegant bedspread is covered in sparkling embroidered gold linens. Everything in this room is more opulent than anything Carlos has ever seen in his life.

“Pretty cool, huh?”

Carlos barely hears Jay, too lost in his quiet ogling. But he does eventually manage to close his mouth and give a slight nod.

“It’s the most amazing room I’ve ever seen,” he sighs, his voice still breathy with awe. “It’s just...beautiful.”

Jay chuckles, letting his hand drop to Carlos’ waist. “Yeah, I thought you’d like it.”

Jay adds pressure to his grip, gently guiding Carlos backwards. Carlos perks a brow at him, confused, until he’s pressed against the wall and Jay leans in to kiss him softly.

“Kinda romantic, don’tcha think? A dark, quiet castle...you and me, alone in a big gorgeous bedroom. Does it give you any...ideas?”

Carlos shakes his head, chuckling quietly before he’s silenced by another kiss, this one more heated than the first. He pulls back a little, pressing a hand to Jay’s chest before he can go back in. “I guess it’s giving you a few. So this is why you were so eager to wander around the castle?”

Jay smirks proudly, curling over Carlos’ hand to kiss at his jaw. “Maybe. It’s not every day we get alone time in a fancy place like this, huh?”

Carlos has to agree. It’s definitely been a while since they’ve had any time to themselves, and especially not somewhere as nice as this. But the approval he wants to voice is quickly lost in the expanse of Jay’s throat, the dark-haired boy already kissing Carlos so deeply, so passionately that he’s forgotten what he was going to say. All his focus has turned to kissing Jay, his arms encircling Jay’s neck to pull him in even closer.

Minutes slip past, neither one even noticing how long they’ve stayed in this spot, with Carlos pinned under Jay, happily making out against the bedroom wall. Eventually Jay’s hands slide under Carlos’ shirt, teasing Carlos with light touches and coaxing giggles against his lips. Carlos retaliates with a firm tug on Jay’s hair, his fingers tangled near the roots and scraping against Jay’s scalp. The combined sensations elicit a pleased groan from Jay - a very, very loud groan, that has Carlos slapping a hand over Jay’s mouth.

“Jay!” he hisses, curling his hand tighter when Jay tries to shake it off. “Do you want to get in trouble?? We need to be quiet.”

Jay jerks his hand back, sliding out of Carlos’ grip to flash him a pointed grin. “Get in trouble? From who, C? The suit of armor in the hallway? Everyone’s back at the party.”

He grabs Carlos’ chin and tilts his face up, smiling sweetly at him and stroking his thumb along Carlos’ cheek.

“Baby. You can chill, ok? It’s just us.”

Carlos relaxes against the warmth of Jay’s body. “I guess you’re right,” he sighs, pecking at Jay’s lips. “It’s just...you know I hate this. I’m not a-a, delinquent.”

Jay chuckles, kissing Carlos firmly before pulling back again. “I know, C. Let’s be real, you were never really good at it, were you?” Jay grins as Carlos serves him a less-than-convincing angry glare. “Oh come on, I just meant the delinquency part’s always been my job. Your brains are what keeps us from getting caught.”

Jay puffs up his chest, smirking proudly, and Carlos just smiles and shakes his head. “Please. You’re just trying to butter me up so I’ll keep making out with you.”

Jay snakes an arm around Carlos’ waist, pushing him in so he’s flush against Jay’s chest. “Maybe. Did it work?” He quips, before sealing their lips again. Carlos hums his agreement, arching into the solidity of Jay’s muscled form as he melts further into the kiss.

Carlos quickly shoves Jay and springs back at the sound of the familiar voice, wiping furiously at his mouth and refusing to meet Ben’s eyes. Jay however, stands tall, crossing his arms and perking a brow at the king, who’s looking shocked and confused from the doorway.

“Sorry man, we were just, uh, looking for the bathroom. And got lost.” The lie spills so casually from Jay’s lips it’s almost hard not to believe it, so Carlos stays quiet next to him, chewing his lip and squeezing Jay’s hand tightly.

“Oh. Wow, you really got lost then.” Ben’s tone is dry as he looks around the room, then scans the hallway briefly. His eyes are wide and a little frantic. “Um, let me show you to the bathroom, ok? This is actually my parents’ room, so we really need to get out of here.”

Ben waves them on, and Jay and Carlos quickly stumble in line behind him out of the room. The king is shuffling down the hall so fast it’s hard for them to keep up, and his awkward gait from the speed has Jay almost snorting.

“Jay,” Carlos hisses, slapping him hard in the stomach. “Don’t make it worse! I can’t believe you took me to the former king Beast’s room. I think we almost gave Ben a heart attack.”

You don’t stare down people that passionately (even if at first you just wanted to catch him as a murderer) if you don’t feel strongly and you don’t forsake your own family and well-being for others if you don’t feel.

Han Juwon would be a broken little softie around the others if given a chance- wanting hugs but not knowing how to ask, would take in strays, would leave anonymous care packages for people, would get clingy when pretty drunk and shameless when he was very drunk. Han Juwon would wear more of those soft fuzzy sweaters and love wearing a sweatshirt on Sunday as he watches whatever cartoon or dramatic show Lee Dongsik has slowly coerced him into allowing himself to like.

He would read poetry and Jane Austen, he would watch movies that make him feel strong emotions (shit like Seven Pounds and Brokeback Mountain) when Lee Dongsik was gone just so he could text him sad messages and tell him to hurry back. He would have cactuses and bamboo and lovingly complain about taking care of them everyday.

He would do all the cleaning so they met his standards but also because he wants things to be easier for Lee Dongsik. He would find small ways to add their personalities into Lee Dongsik’s family house, starting to make it look less and less like a bleeding wound and more like a home.

Han Juwon would visit Yoo Jaeyi every morning before work and they would have frequent gatherings at the butcher shop. He would pretend to hate talking with Kwon Hyuk but text or call the prosecutor daily and would become super over protective when the prosecutor starts to date.

He’s just a sweet, soft boy and he never had people in his life that allowed him to be. If he allowed more safe people in and allowed his walls to come down then I think this would happen.

The Writing In Apex Kinda Sucks And Also They Use Ship Bait As A Plot Device I Hate It Here

a stupid essay/rant encouraged by @zombiegloss that originally started as a youtube video script so if its like. weird at points. this was intended to be a verbal rant SNZISKSIA

basically i'm gonna talk abt the caustic-wattson-crypto relationship drama and how i think it was mishandled and how much the writers kind of Suck because i Can

you are free to disagree with me on any of my points and think that this aspect of the story was handled well, this is just my opinion, and i'd love to hear your thoughts and counterpoints !

first, addressing some things:

i know this is a battle royale and not necessarily a story-based game, so i can’t expect it to have masterful witcher-style writing.

but with the direction the game seems to be going; putting quests, evolving interactions, and comics in the game, plus coming out with a lore book and hinting at something bigger in the future, i think it’s fair to criticize it for lackluster writing, especially since what i’m criticizing has been something present since Apex’s story technically began.

secondly, i am not a professional writer. i’m a high schooler who writes as a hobby. i don’t have the decades of experience that some of the apex writers do, and i can’t claim to be a better writer than they are--but i also don’t have to be a five-star chef to realize that something tastes bad. when i critique something and give suggestions, i am not saying i could’ve done it better. i’m just bringing up what i think could have worked.

third, before i upset anyone , when i say a relationship is badly written, i’m not telling you that you can’t ship it or that your ship sucks. i’ll briefly touch on the shipping aspect of this and how it’s a detriment to the story but Ye

okay, so with that out of the way, let us Begin

relationships are often the emotional core of a story, and how strong your reaction is to conflict in these relationships depends on how the story sets them up. if you want the audience to care about these characters and what they go through, you need to develop them and establish the type of relationship they have well. it’s why so many people cried in the last episode of telltale’s the walking dead. you’ve spent roughly 12 hours bonding with clementine and protecting her, and your relationship with her is part of several story beats as well as character beats for lee. 

when these two characters’ relationship reaches its peak at the end of the game, it’s powerful, and it’s emotional. you care. you feel something, and the fact that you have to choose what to do to lee only makes it more gut-wrenching. 

now, the walking dead is entirely story-based and especially character-driven, so it may be unfair to compare it to apex, but i just wanted to lay the groundwork down for what i think is a strong relationship that makes you feel something when conflict arrives, in this case the conflict being lee getting bit and clementine having to decide his fate.

the broken ghost in general is kind of not-good sometimes, tom casiello previously wrote for soap operas and you can really, REALLY tell sometimes.

this story feels like it should’ve taken place a little later, and that we should’ve had a season to actually set up the characters and their relationships, but that’s a story for another day.

to put it bluntly, the set-up for the crypto, wattson, and caustic conflict is done poorly. for caustic and wattson's relationship it’s a little better, but not by much. 

wattson and caustic having a relationship was hinted at in season 2, when her lore indicated that caustic was among one of the Legends who comforted her after her father died. In season four lore materials posted on Twitter, an email from Jacob Young states that Caustic is acting paternal towards Wattson. In season five, interactions get added to the Game, and this is the first time we actually see their relationship in action, as they have unique revive voice lines for each other. in the quests, when wattson is injured, caustic lashes out at loba and attacks her out of what seems to be anger at wattson’s current state.

Side Note this plot point was really stupid and done for cheap drama because she literally wakes up like two chapters later and they don’t even give her anything to say it’s just suddenly oh yeah crypto and wattson are working together. the same exact injury thing happens to octane later but nobody gIVES A SHIT because again, it’s just cheap soap opera drama.

their relationship might seem a little bit sudden for anyone who wasn’t on top of twitter lore drops, but like, it’s okay, i guess. i’ll give it the slightest credit for at least establishing something between the two in terms of voice lines and stuff, even if for some it might seem like it came out of nowhere.

what did come out of nowhere, though, was crypto and wattson’s friendship. in the quests, crypto and wattson are tasked with rebuilding the broken ghost because of their respective skills, and they’re seen talking in chapter six while they work on it. we’re not really given a clear timeline on how long the story in the broken ghost is, but i think it takes about a week, maybe.

unlike wattson and caustic, their relationship has been given absolutely zero material to work with before now, not even a passing glance in the trailers--which is a little weird considering crypto took down the repulsor tower and destroyed wattson’s home, but. Whatever.

tl dr of the chapter: crypto and wattson talk to each other while doing nerd shit, crypto laughs at wattson’s bad pun, and then suddenly they’re BESTIEEEES, until a couple dozen lines later in the same chapter. then they’re Not.

crypto’s drone gets hacked by revenant while everyone was kind of on edge after the reveal of a spy in their midst, he gets framed as the spy by caustic, anddddd wattson gets upset.

before i get into how dumb this storyline is, i’m gonna talk about the set-up to this conflict.

we have been given no reason to believe that these characters have ever talked to each other, and quite frankly, their friendship doesn’t really make sense.

ignoring the fact that crypto destroyed wattson’s home--which she probably doesn’t know about, so that’s forgiven for now--crypto is a paranoid guy. in the lore book he makes people stand on fucking footprints in his house so he can scan them for weapons and listening devices, and he apparently doesn’t stick around much after the games and nobody knows anything about him because he doesn’t talk to them.

a key part of crypto’s story is the fact that he is undercover and afraid of anyone finding out anything about him ever. him becoming friends with wattson kind of comes out of the blue, and we’re not even given a reason as to why they supposedly became close in the first place. i would kind of understand if like, maybe he draws parallels with her and mila in his mind and it makes him open up a little more, but that doesn’t happen. he just laughs at her joke and suddenly they’re friends.

maybe they’re trying to go for this ‘wattson can become friends with anybody’ angle, kind of hinted at with caustic but not really we’ll get into that, but that also? kind of doesn’t make sense since so many of her voice lines straight-up say she doesn’t understand people and electricity is more her thing, but honestly, she also does have those really friendly elements in her voice lines too, so its not as egregious as what they did with crypto.

their sudden out-of-the-blue friendship would’ve been fine if they spent a little more time fleshing it out, and giving us something to work with, but instead, the story immediately tries to rip it apart and frame it as this grand conflict where crypto is framed as the mole, crypto then accuses caustic, and wattson feels betrayed.

except it doesn’t really work, because we don’t give a shit. for several reasons. 

one: crypto and wattson became friends and then ended their friendship in the same exact chapter. they did not speak to each other onscreen until this chapter began, you can read the entire quest on the wiki and see for yourself that their interactions up until that point were nonexistent aside from mentions in the narration that they were building something together.

the reason wattson feels betrayed is kind of stupid too. why does she really care that much if one of them betrayed loba? nobody else really cared about the fact that one of them was a spy, in fact, nobody even seems to like loba that much, and they just found out that loba’s been lying to them this whole time, and wattson was conscious for that conversation and had a speaking line, so she’s fully aware of the situation. 

maybe it’s just like, the idea that one of them lied, but that’s still kind of a weak reason. 

this entire betrayal thing is just dumb, and it gets even worse when you realize that there could have been an actual legitimate reason for wattson to feel betrayed by crypto--even if it still would’ve come across as weak conflict because of their newly established friendship, it would’ve made more sense than this. 

Crypto destroyed Wattson’s home. He took down the tower and then all the flyers and stuff invaded Kings Canyon and made it their bitch. Not only that, but Wattson considers the Syndicate her family. The Syndicate are the very people who framed Crypto for murder and he’s trying to take them down. 

They could’ve set up actual conflict with these things, and it almost seemed like they would, because Caustic briefly brings up that Crypto could be working with Revenant because he has something against the Syndicate but then that doesn’t really go anywhere and we’re just back to Wattson feeling betrayed because either Crypto or Caustic was a spy and she doesn’t know who.

Weak conflict could’ve been made better by a strong relationship and a weak relationship could’ve still been interesting with strong conflict, but both the relationship between Crypto and Wattson and the conflict that drives them splitting up as friends were really weak and didn’t make much sense. 

It would’ve been ten times more interesting if Wattson found out Crypto ruined her home, the arena she grew up in, and was now participating in the Games to take out the people she regards as her family. That’s where her distrust could’ve manifested and conflict could’ve began, but instead it was the stupid betraying loba thing. why do you care. you just started talking to this guy like 2 hours ago.

also caustic’s whole reason for framing crypto feels stupid as fuck. he didn’t just frame crypto randomly, he framed him specifically because he doesn't want him to influence wattsob because he likes her Big Brain, but this is the FIRST time we have seen those two interact. 

what influence is he talking about? wraith and wattson have been shown to be friendly with each other in the trailers, according to tom’s tweets, and in the story too so why doesn’t he frame her? at this point the audience had slightly more build-up for those two’s relationship than crypto and wattson and a betrayal storyline would’ve felt a little more deserved if still weak.

this is the point where i briefly want to touch upon shipping, and the fact that part of this conflict feels driven by shipbait. 

aside from their relationship coming out of nowhere and the writers trying to make the stakes seem high and deeply emotional to the characters involved (despite this essentially being the first time they’ve ever interacted) tom casiello literally addresses shippers in a tweet regarding chapter seven, and as the story between these characters progresses, it becomes clear to me, at least that the crypto-wattson thing is just bait for shippers, and it’s lazy. 

it’s easy to get away with giving your characters little to no relationship development if you’re just counting on shippers to do the heavy mental lifting for you

why should i put any effort into making this relationship seem believable? people are going to see a young guy and a young girl having bare minimum interaction and assume there’s romantic interest! then i don’t have to do any work, see look, it’s a ready-made relationship wrapped in a bow for me! all that’s left for me to do is give them conflict so i can keep teasing shippers with lines like ‘you never deserved her’!

i think it’s reasonable for me to suspect shipbait, since tom casiello likes doing darksparks shipbait on twitter, and i’m like, eighty percent sure mirage and bloodhound suddenly being childhood friends in the book is shipbait too, because these characters were the number one ship in apex for a long time despite little to no interaction, and then all of a sudden in the lore book they’re childhood friends despite this literally never being mentioned before?

like bloodhound is set up to be mysterious and nobody knows what they look like, or where they’re from, or who their family is--except for mirage Apparently, who played with them when he was a kid on their home planet, and has seen them with their mask off, because bloodhound did not wear a mask when their parents were still alive.

its weird.

i’m pretty sure they’ve said somewhere they were working on this book before apex even came out, so i could just be completely wrong and they always planned for mirage and bloodhound to know each other, but if that’s the case, why did they never mention it like they did octane and lifeline?

i refuse to believe MIRAGE never brought it up either like ‘heeeeyy bloodhound remember when we used to throw eggs at our parents lab haha wanna go do to that to bangalore’s room’

ANYWAYS I GOT OFF TOPIC. POINT IS, shipping is a detriment to the story because the writers don’t feel like they actually have to put any work into establishing or developing the relationship between characters when they know the community’s just going to do it for them anyways, and that they can put in shipbait and it’s fine and it makes sense when it really doesn’t.

imagine watching captain america civil war after not seeing a single other marvel movie.

why would you care about the avengers splitting up or tony and steve butting heads or steve’s commitment to bucky? you wouldn’t care, at least not as much as someone who’s seen all the movies and knows the relationship between the characters and why the sokovia accords exist in the first place. you don’t have context and you don’t have any reason to be emotionally invested in these characters’ relationship.

 this feels like that. the writers tried to squeeze this relationship and stuff into a single chapter and we don’t fucking care unless we were already invested in the idea of their relationship (shippers) because we barely spent any time with it.

so to summarize this little section, the set-up of this storyline Kinda Sucks! crypto and wattson barely seem to know each other, because we the audience barely saw them together and the writers are relying on shipbait in place of a relationship.

wattson and caustic are a little better but not great, but the conflict is stupid and it only gets stupider.

moving onto summarizing the rest of the broken ghost, gibraltar and caustic talk, caustic LITERALLY confesses to being the mole and says he framed crypto so he couldn’t corrupt wattson and to appear innocent because his identity was suspected, then that wraps up the season storyline.

season six begins with new voice lines, where wattson has had enough of crypto and caustic’s shit and is all passive-aggressive and going ‘this doesn’t change anything’. she has to decide who to trust, and how to figure out The Truth for herself because she’s not a little girl anymore. crypto and caustic are both trying to convince her they’re innocent and it creates some interesting conflict.

just kidding. it’s terrible conflict. you want to know why?

BECAUSE GIBRALTAR TRIED TO TELL HER THE TRUTH, RIGHT AFTER THE SEASON 5 QUEST HAPPENED, AND SHE LITERALLY REFUSED TO HEAR IT.

LIKE THERE’S A SEASON 6 LOADING SCREEN WHERE HE’S TELLING EVERYONE THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, AND WHEN HE GETS TO WATTSON AND IS LIKE HEY I KNOW WHO THE MOLE WAS AND WHY THEY DID IT, SHE JUST GOES i dont wanna hear it. i need to think

SHE SPENDS ALMOST TWO ENTIRE SEASONS MAD AT CRYPTO FOR SOMETHING HE DIDN’T DO BECAUSE SHE TOLD GIBRALTAR TO FUCK OFF WHEN HE TRIED TO TELL HER WHAT HAPPENED

i think it was towards the end of season 6 or the beginning of season 7 where apex posted this picture of wattson asleep at her desk where she has a letter from gibraltar on it that looks like it tells her the truth, so she knows now, she knows what happened, but NOW her issue is the fact that she doesn’t know anything about crypto.

WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT IS YOUR GODDAMN DAMAGE. YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BLOODHOUND EITHER ARE YOU THIS UPSET WITH BLOODHOUND TOO?? HAVE YOU EVER TALKED TO PATHFINDER. DO YOU HATE PATHFINDER TOO

oh but she was friends with crypto and now she’s mad that he lied to her EXCEPT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WASN’T BUILT UP WELL SO IT JUST FEELS STUPID. THEY SPENT LONGER BEING NOT-FRIENDS THAN THEY SPENT BEING FRIENDS. THEY BECAME FRIENDS IN ONE CHAPTER AND THEN IMMEDIATELY AT THE END OF THAT CHAPTER THEIR FRIENDSHIP ENDED AND THEN WATTSON SPENT LIKE 2 SEASONS MAD AT HIM FOR SOMETHING HE DIDN’T DO . 

AND THE WRITERS TRIED TO RECTIFY THIS BY SAYING OH SHE’S NOT MAD ABOUT THE TRAITOR THING SHE’S MAD BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HIM AND IT’S LIKE WHY THE FUCK DID YOU NOT MAKE THAT CLEAR WHY DOES SHE SAY ‘IT DOESN’T CHANGE WHAT YOU DID’ IN HER VOICE LINES WHY DOES SHE CALL HIM A TRAITOR IF HER CONFLICT WAS HER NOT KNOWING MUCH ABOUT HIM . WHAT DID HE DO. 

HE JUST STOOD THERE AND LAUGHED AT HER JOKE AND THEN HE GOT FRAMED AND THEN THAT WAS THE END OF THE CHAPTER AND NOW SHES SUDDENLY LIKE IM ACTUALLY MAD BECAUSE YOURE A LIAR AND I CANT TRUST YOU EVEN THOUGH I NOW KNOW YOU WERE FRAMED I STILL DO NOT LIKE YOU AND HES LIKE YEAH THATS MY FAULT

The Caustic voicelines are stupid too, again his reason for framing Crypto was stupid and a lot of his voicelines just seem to be that shipbait thing again but like from the angle of overprotective dad who doesn’t like the new boyfriend. it’s stupid but not as egeregious as this next part which is

crypto telling wattson his identity.

CRYPTO was framed for MURDER and is paranoid and can’t trust anyone and doesn’t talk to anyone and the last time he did talk to someone he got framed for Another thing and the person he was talking to turned her back on him and actively refused to know the truth for like 2 seasons and then he went This Is Fine I Can Tell Her My Identity

the stupidest update to this storyline was crypto telling wattson the truth

why did they do it on the dropship where there are presumably syndicate members and other legends around.

why didn’t he scan wattson for listening devices like he did for pathfinder in the book.

why is he telling her his identity when he knows she has very close ties to the people that FRAMED HIM for MURDER. Does he trust her that much? WHY? They spoke to each other in a chapter and then spent two seasons not talking to each other beyond passive-aggressive BS. why are you so fucking stupid taejoon

their relationship was so poorly set-up that even if the writers maybe intended for them to come across as close friends who had spent weeks bonding, it really feels like they became friends in a single conversation, had a falling out, and now crypto suddenly trusts her with his identity after an undetermined amount of time because he wants to be friends again. 

that does not make SENSE this conflict feels contrived AS FUCK and the resolution feels even worse and unearned UGGGHHHH

it honestly comes across as crypto feeling desperate for friendship, and maybe this would’ve worked better if that’s the angle they played it as.

he’s been alone for roughly two years, and just wants a friend, and he’s honestly so lonely he just breaks down to the first person who’s really talked to him. it could’ve been an interesting little part of his character, and they could've gone into depth about how much this situation has affected him, but that’s not what they’re doing. he’s still paranoid and anxious and doesn’t trust anyone, except for wattson, because the plot needs him to or else there won’t be any stupid soap opera drama.

and to rub salt in the wound, wattson’s new voice lines with caustic have him telling her that she forgave crypto.

WHAT ARE YOU FORGIVING HIM FOR. ARE YOU FORGIVING HIM FOR BEING FRAMED? WHY DID HE HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO YOU WHEN YOU WERE THE ONE WHO REFUSED TO HEAR THE TRUTH?

Caustic’s new voice lines to Crypto where he’s like ‘what did you tell her’--YOU TOLD GIBRALTAR STRAIGHT-UP YOUR EVIL MASTER PLAN LIKE A SUPERVILLAIN AND NOW YOU’RE SURPRISED WATTSON AND CRYPTO ARE ON GOOD TERMS NOW?!

THAT’S LIKE TELLING SOMEONE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND THEN BEING SURPRISED WHEN YOU BECOME THE VICTIM OF IDENTITY FRAUD. YOU SET YOURSELF UP FOR THIS WHY ARE YOU ACTING LIKE CRYPTO DID SOMETHING SINISTER OR LIED OR WHATEVER. WHAT THE FUCK. WHY DO YOU HAVE LIKE 3 BRAINCELLS

this is at like ten pages already so i’m going to just try and wrap this up quickly. 

it’s frustrating seeing this storyline play out when there are actually good relationships and storylines written into apex. i’m kind of getting tired of the loba and revenant conflict, but we at least had set-up to it in the form of a few animated shorts and it doesn’t play out as stupidly as this story does. bangalore and loba’s friendship is actually developed well, even if the point between the end of season 5 and season 6 where they suddenly talk like each other feels like it could’ve used a little more. 

where crypto and wattson having an established friendship in the broken ghost failed, lifeline and octane’s established friendship works because we’ve been told since octane’s release they were childhood friends and given lore materials that indicate they’ve known each other for a very long time.

apex wants this storyline between crypto and wattson and caustic to feel dramatic and tense and ultimately rewarding when crypto and wattson did become friends for real and stuff, but instead it just comes across as hollow and empty. 

there’s nothing there. it’s a case of tell, don’t show, and it looks like this stupid conflict is gonna keep going for another couple of seasons at this rate.

Okay so this is absolutely a fred x reader, dad!fred fic. Where he sings the row row row your boat nursery rhyme to his daughter whenever she’s upset or crying to help comfort her and he sings it to her as she falls asleep. And it’s just kind of their thing, you know?? so there’d be a bunch of little scenes of him singing it to her at different parts of her life. but then as she grows up she starts to hate it a little bit because she’s getting older now and it makes her feel like a baby so she asks Fred to stop singing it to her. And it makes him sad but he agrees because he doesn’t want to make her upset. until the night before she leaves for Hogwarts when Fred is saying goodnight she asks him to sing it to her again and he kinda teases her about how she told him it makes her feel like a baby. And then she admits that she’s scared about going off to Hogwarts and being away from him and he gets all emo and he lays in bed next to her and holds her as he sings to her softly, and when he’s done he reminds her that she’ll always be his baby no matter what, and when she’s off at school and misses him all she has to do is sing their song and it’ll be as if he’s right there with her. 

“Open up a window.”

This one would be a post!war, Fred dies (sorry), George x reader fic. and so there’s this Danish tradition that when someone dies you open up a window as a symbol of not only letting them go but also letting new, fresh air in as a reminder that there’s always a new better day on the horizon. Anyway, after Fred dies George refuses to open any of the windows of the flat because he’s not ready to move on yet, and he thinks that by keeping the windows closed he’s keeping fred’s spirit with him. And then one day when he's out on his daily walk around Diagon Alley that Molly makes him do he runs into the reader who he hasn’t seen since school and they stand there and talk for a bit and it makes him feel a bit more normal, like before the war. and so every day when George bumps into her they stand there talking for longer and longer each day until it’s starting to get dark out and George invites her out to dinner. and being with y/n has made him so genuinely happy and has made him start to look forward to each new day and so when he finally gets back to his flat that night he opens up a window because he knows fred will always be with him no matter what and he's finally ready for a fresh new part of his life to start.

Hey Anitra!! I just finished reading From The Start and 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 I love it so so so much!! Just the way even we, the readers can see that Harry is so so gone for our boy, even though it's in louis' pov, you're one hell of an amazingly talented writer did you know that. And the first proposal, how dare you!! The New Year's kiss, are you trying to kill me or what!! And sudden anon hate came barreling in to my inbox but your story kept me so wrapped up in it I'm not even upset about it!!

Bless you for this ask! I’m sorry it took awhile for me to post it. It made me so so happy though! And yes, I know what you mean about waiting to read a fic you’re looking forward to until you are in the proper mood for it. I’m so glad that you considered that for one of mine. 

I think a lot about how to write from one perspective and still get what you need from the other main character. And I think it always stays in my head because of writing the first fic I ever wrote which was a modern day Pride and Prejudice fic. I had Jane Austen’s brilliance to follow as a guide for that, and it’s really stuck with me every time I write from one pov. 

By the way, your awful anon is definitely a JustinTM. (You know, the whole Andrew thing was happening when I was writing the fic, and I meant to go back and change his name to Andrew but I forgot haha. Oh well.)
